洛佩兹出生成长于纽约的布朗克斯区。母亲Guadalupe Rodríguez（幼儿园老师）与父亲David Lopez（计算机专家）都是波多黎各人。洛佩兹是一位使用英语和西班牙语的双语者，有两个姐妹（—位是在著名新闻电视台WCBS-TV工作的Lynda，另一位则是音乐教师的Leslie）。
　　洛佩兹的求学生涯都就读于天主教学校。自十九岁开始就自己筹措学费来学习歌唱与舞蹈课程。在离开Baruch College之后，洛佩兹将自己的工作时间分配在律师事务所工作、学习舞蹈课程与在曼哈顿夜店的表演上，在试镜争取舞蹈演出数月之后，她被选中成为数个饶舌歌手音乐录像带中演出的舞者，像是在1990年『Yo! MTV』的演出中、以及在美国音乐大奖中担任NKOTB的后备舞者（New Kids on the Block在此大奖中演出的是1991年出版的歌曲《Games》）。
　　在被拒绝两次之后，洛佩兹获得她第一次受到瞩目的演出机会，是在1990年的电视喜剧节目In Living Color中成为名叫『Fly Girl』的舞者。很快，洛佩兹成为了珍妮·杰克逊的专属舞者，也在珍妮·杰克逊1993年发行的《That's the Way Love Goes》的MV中露脸。
　　洛佩兹曾在电视短剧《South Central》、《Second Chances》与《Hotel Malibu》中演出。另外也参与电视电影Nurses on the Line: The Crash of Flight 7。 洛佩兹也曾在电视喜剧《In Living Color》担任「飞翔女孩」的角色（舞者）
