Bob Seger是美国上世纪70年代最受欢迎，也是最有特点的硬摇滚歌手之一。虽然Bob Seger的音乐也有着很浓厚的蓝领气息，但他却从来没有像同时代的布鲁斯·斯普林斯汀（Bruce Springsteen）一样得到过评论界的青睐。
　　1961年，16岁的Bob Seger开始玩音乐，最初是作为底特律三人组合the Decibels的领军人物。当时，Bob Seger日后的经纪人Eddie "Punch" Andrews也是the Decibels的一员。在来到Ann Arbor之后，Seger开始和The Town Criers乐队合作。随后，Bob Seger又加入了Doug Brown & the Omens。不久之后，乐队改名为the Beach Bums，但发展的并不顺利。1966年，Bob Seger发行了他自己的第一支单曲《East Side Story》，在当地很受欢迎。之后，包括《Persecution Smith》和《Heavy Music》等在内的一系列单曲都通过Cameo Records面世。1968年，Bob Seger组建了Bob Seger System乐队并与Capitol Records签约。在当年春天，Bob Seger的首张个人专辑《Ramblin' Gamblin' Man》正式发行，同名单曲在美国颇受欢迎，名列流行单曲榜的第17位。在首张专辑取得开门红之后，Bob Seger System在一年之后很快就奉上了他们的第二张专辑《Noah》，但这张专辑却令所有歌迷大失所望。1969年末，Bob Seger决定暂时与音乐告别，开始回到校园上大学。　　1970年夏，更换了一支新的伴奏乐队的Bob Seger发行了他的第三张专辑《Mongrel》。在他1971年的专辑《Brand New Morning》中，Bob Seger解散了他更换不久的这支新乐队，独自一人录制了这张专辑。在这张专辑发行之后，Bob Seger开始和Dave Teegarden与Skip "Van Winkle" Knape一起演出。1972年，Bob Seger在他自己与经纪人Eddie "Punch" Andrews共同创办的Palladium Records发行了他的最新专辑《Smokin' O.P.'s》。在这张专辑中，Dave Teegarden与Skip "Van Winkle" Knape为Seger伴奏。但Bob Seger精心打造出的这张唱片在发行之后的销量居然很差，而他1973年的《Back in '72》与1974年发行的专辑《Seven》的销量也都不如意。1975年，Bob Seger重返Capitol Records并发行了专辑《Beautiful Loser》。在录制《Beautiful Loser》专辑时，Bob Seger又组建了一支新的乐队“银子弹”（the Silver Bullet）。乐队由吉他手德鲁·阿波特（Drew Abbott），贝斯手克里斯·坎贝尔（Chris Campbell），键盘手罗宾·罗宾斯（Robyn Robbins），萨克斯手阿尔托·里德（Alto Reed）和鼓手查理·艾伦·马丁（Charlie Allen Martin）组成。　　《Live Bullet》的大获成功使得Bob Seger的下张专辑《Night Moves》在1976年一发行便打入了美国专辑榜的前十名。《Night Moves》成了Bob Seger第二张大获成功的专辑，其中的单曲《Night Moves》，《Mainstreet》和《Rock & Roll Never Forgets》都十分畅销。1978年夏，Bob Seger发行了他的第11张专辑《Stranger in Town》。这张专辑延续了此前两张专辑的成功，其中的单曲《Still the Same》，《Hollywood Nights》，《We've Got Tonite》和《Old Time Rock & Roll》也都是排行榜上的热门单曲。连续三张专辑的热卖奠定了Bob Seger在美国流行乐坛的地位，到这个时候，Bob Seger已经是全美最受欢迎的摇滚歌手之一。
